Summary:

A humorous account simply by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of the boating holiday in the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The three guys derive from Jerome himself (the narrator J.) and two real-life close friends, George Wingrave (who become a senior supervisor in Barclays Loan company) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of the London printing business, known as Harris in the reserve), with whom he frequently took boating vacations. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, “as Jerome admits, created out of this area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog.” The trip is an average boating holiday of the time within a Thames camping skiff. This was just after industrial boat traffic around the Top Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s trend for boating being a leisure activity.
