Created by Irving Brecher, The Life of Riley starred William Bendix as Brooklyn-born Chester A. Riley, a family man who worked as an aircraft riveter at the imaginary Cunningham Aircraft place in California. The tales were usually established in the home, cheerfully disrupting lifestyle along with his malapropisms and ill-timed intervention into minor problems. His stock answer to every switch of fate “what a revoltin’ advancement that is!” became a favorite catch phrase. Paula Winslowe was Riley’s wife, Peg; John about THE LIFE SPAN of Riley, Collection 1 Dark brown doubled as undertaker ‘Digger’ O’Dell so that as Riley’s co-worker, Jim Gillis; Tommy Cook, Bobby Ellis and Scotty Beckett each played the part of Riley’s kid, Junior; and Sharon Douglas performed the Riley’s little girl, Babs. Alan Reed (the tone of voice of Fred Flintstone) performed multiple personas, including Riley’s employer, Mr. Stevenson and Peg’s dad. Whereas Gillis offered Riley bad information that got him into trouble, Digger offered him good advice that ‘helped him out of the hole.’ The Life of Riley aired on radio from 1944 until 1951 making a successful transition to tv in 1949. Due to a agreement dispute, Bendix couldn’t initially play Riley on tv so the role visited Jackie Gleason.
