The detective character, Sam Spade, was created by Dashiell Hammett for his crime novel The Maltese Falcon. Spade was a hard-boiled detective with cool detachment, an enthusiastic eye for fine detail and unflinching perseverance to attain his personal justice. The character is most carefully associated with Humphrey Bogart who performed Sam Spade in the third and most well-known film version from the Maltese Falcon. In 1946, among radio’s top companies (William Spier) brought “Sam Spade” to CBS radio starring newcomer about The Ventures of Sam Spade, Detective, Collection 1 Howard Duff with Lurene Tuttle (and sometimes Sandra Gould) as Spade’s secretary, Effie Perrine and sponsored by Wildroot Cream Essential oil. Duff took a somewhat more tongue-in-cheek method of the character than the novel or movies. Dashiell Hammett lent his name to the air series but acquired little participation. In 1947, scriptwriters Jason Wayne and Bob Tallman received an Edgar Prize for Greatest Radio Drama from your Mystery Authors of America.
