The story begins in Folkestone, as the first troops march off to leading lines. Soon, family members like the Grahams and the Wilsons starts to feel the impact of battle, as the wounded come back and initial Belgian refugees, after that Canadian troops, arrive in the seaside vacation resort. In addition, the White colored Feather and suffragette actions grow in recognition, and a tide of grief increasingly leads people to thoughts from the hereafter.

Industrial Tynemouth, meanwhile, is certainly experiencing a quite different war. The factories and shipyards are at peak production, and more ladies are joining the workforce. On the munitions factory, owner Geoffrey Marshall and his family members must adapt to the changing moments – as must employees like Fraser and Edie Chadwick.

Tackling themes including the outbreak of war, recruitment, industry, profiteering and spiritualism are a few of radio’s foremost dramatists including Katie Hims, Sebastian Baczkiewicz and Shaun McKenna. Among the comprehensive ensemble are Michael Bertenshaw, Keely Beresford, Freddie Fox, Ami Metcalf, Edmund Wiseman, Barbara Flynn, Tag Stobbart and Toby Jones, with Dame Harriet Walter producing a cameo appearance as Emmeline Pankhurst.
