Ayn Rand’s dystopic science-fiction novella occurs at some unspecified upcoming date. Mankind has entered another dark age due to what Rand noticed as the weaknesses of socialistic thinking and economics. Technological advancement is currently carefully planned — when it’s allowed to occur at all — and the idea of individuality has been eliminated. As can be common in her work, Rand draws a clear distinction between the ‘socialist/communal’ values of equality and brotherhood as well as the ‘successful/capitalist’ beliefs of achievement and individuality.
